History of VADA
Vada was already known at the time of Cicero(64 B.C.) as a natural harbour and subsequently as a refuge for the Saracen pirates. Its origins date back about 2000 years, as may be seen in a "Pantingerian" map drawn in 330 B.C Vada came under the authority of Volterra and was very important for it. Many Roman ships were wrecked on the sand-banks about 4 Km offshore and to this day lucky divers can come across pieces of terracotta pots and jars lying on the sea-floor.
The archeological excavation at St. Gaetano are particularly interesting since they have brought to light the remains of Roman baths, and a necropolis traceable to the III-II centuries B.C..
During the night of October 19th, 1867, Giuseppe Garibaldi landed at Vada after his escape from the island of Caprera.
